Lower School Nurse

Poly Prep seeks applicants for the position of Lower School Nurse. The School Nurse plays a vital role in promoting the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff by managing the daily operations of the health office, providing immediate and compassionate care, administering medications, and maintaining accurate health records. This position is for the 2025-2026 school year.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  •  Provide both emergency and preventative nursing care for all persons at the Park Slope campus, including necessary follow-up arrangements and health screenings.
  • Maintain first aid equipment to be used throughout the Park Slope campus and on field trips.
  • In coordination with the Dyker Heights nursing team, maintain school health policies to protect the health of students and staff in accordance with the guidelines of the NYC and NYS Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene, including vaccination records and yearly physical exam forms.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Early Childhood, ensure compliance with all provisions of Article 43 for the school’s early childhood program, including documentation of required training, physicals, and immunizations.
  • Follow procedures for storing and administering both prescription and over-the-counter medications for students and staff, including emergency medications such as EpiPens.
  • Maintain accurate student health records in a confidential manner in order to provide health reports and statistical analysis, and monitor students with health conditions/concerns.
  • Complete confidential employee health and injury records/incident reports.
  • Provide necessary direction to administrators in the event of a health crisis to ensure the situation is managed in a manner that will minimize anxiety and optimize the health, safety, and well-being of the Poly Prep community.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and medical developments to support the management of chronic health conditions of students, including asthma, diabetes, and severe allergies.
  • Ensure the Park Slope health office is properly staffed on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM from two weeks before the start of the academic year through the end of June. The Lower School Nurse must be present for all days of the Lower School June Camp.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Valid Registered Professional Nurse license in the state of New York

Experience:  5 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in schools or as a pediatric Emergency Department nurse

Specific Skills: 

  • High-level interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to students from Nursery through Grade 4 and their families
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and crisis management skills. Ability to multitask and remain calm in high-pressure situations
  • Excellent assessment skills with the ability to intervene appropriately to continually meet the needs of students and staff
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agencies, and other community resources

Special Requirements:

  • The Lower School Nurse must be present for all days of the Lower School June Camp (typically the last two weeks of June).

 Salary:  $85,000 -$95,000 per year
