
Security Officer
Poly Prep seeks applicants for the position of Security Officer. A School Security Officer plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and supportive school environment. By combining enforcement with approachability, this role ensures that students, faculty & families feel secure while fostering a respectful, orderly atmosphere. This position is for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
7am - 4pm shift, Weekend Rotation at Dyker Campus 8am- 4pm
Hours may be subject to change due to school functions and needs of the department/institution
- Monitor entrances, hallways, and school grounds to ensure safety and prevent unauthorized access
- Assist with and participate in all scheduled fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency preparedness exercises
- Supervise and coordinate with staff on school bus arrival and dismissal procedures including bus tracking and incident reporting
- Respond promptly to any security issues or disturbances within the school or surrounding campus areas
- Report and document all safety violations, suspicious activities, and accidents in accordance with school policies
- Provide a visible security presence to deter misconduct and reassure staff and students
- Assist with traffic and crowd control during school events or emergencies.
- Monitor security cameras and alarm systems (if applicable)
- Enforce school rules and regulations regarding student conduct, visitor access, and property use.
- Work collaboratively with school administration, staff, and local law enforcement as needed.
- Perform any other security-related duties as assigned by the administration.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or security training preferred.
Experience: 3-5 years of experience in school security preferred.
Specific Skills:
- Situational awareness and alertness to identify and respond to potential safety threats quickly
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for interacting with students, staff, parents, and emergency personnel
- Crisis management and de-escalation skills, especially during emergencies or behavioral incidents
- Ability to follow and enforce safety protocols, school policies, and regulations
- Technical proficiency with radios, security systems, surveillance equipment, and bus tracking tools
- Teamwork and collaboration skills for working with administrators, staff, and law enforcement
- Sound judgment and decision-making, especially under pressure or in high-stress situations
- Physical fitness and mobility to patrol the school, respond quickly to incidents, and stand for extended periods of time.
- Conflict resolution skills to help resolve disputes calmly and fairly
Certifications/License:
- NY State Department of Security Guard License (must have)
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Fire License (If a candidate does not have the following fire certifications at time of hire, they will be required to obtain and an outlined timeline will be laid out with the candidate.)
- S95 - Supervision of fire alarm systems and other related systems
- F07 - Fire and emergency drill conductor.
- F03 - Indoor place of assembly safety personnel.
- F01 – Fire Guard for Impairment (Citywide)
Salary Range: $20-25 hourly
